Our Wines

We pride ourselves in making small batches of superb, distinct wine, sourced from family vineyards. Tucked away in the idyllic Napa Valley’s “nested” appellation of Chiles Valley (once known as the “High Valley”), our vineyards lie 600 to 800 feet above the Napa Valley floor. Our vines benefit from this unique terroir, with its high-altitude breezes, milder climate, and extended growing period. Our 12 vineyard blocks are named in honor of each of our founding father’s 12 children.

Our old-fashioned attention to detail is complemented by our investment in the latest winemaking equipment and the technical rigor of our fifth-generation head winemaker, Aimée Sunseri, a graduate of UC Davis in Viticulture and Enology.

Nichelini classics include Cabernet Sauvignon, old-vine Zinfandel and our renowned Muscadelle de Bordelais (formerly titled Sauvignon Vert). In addition, we have an exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah and some limited releases available only at the winery.

"It is a heavy baton to carry, but the honor of making legacy wines only drives me towards perfecting my craft," says Aimée.

Taste the difference 120 years makes.

The bright watermelon hue of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé was achieved through the saignée method. This vintage was soaked with the skins and seeds for 16 hours, then ambient temperature fermented in small stainless steel barrels for 65 days. The grapes are from a 35-year-old vineyard block producing a complex rosé that is refreshingly dry, while offering fruit-forward aromas of strawberry, watermelon and lime. This is a Rosé that is the perfect “opening act”: to be paired with hors d’oeuvres, to bring along to a picnic, or to open with friends on the porch on a summer evening! 94 cases made

This wine is the finale to our 125th anniversary year! It is 50% Pinot Grigio, which is actually a variation on Pinot Noir, and 50% Sauvignon Blanc. It was naturally fermented in the bottle in the traditional French method and aged in glass for a little over a year. Aimée, our winemaker, wanted something that the family had never done before and to discover what the terroir in the cooler Chiles Valley District of Napa Valley can do for a sparkling wine. The result is a very pale yellow, bright, clean wine with aromas and flavors of citrus that are refreshing on the palette. Only 125 cases made, one for each year.

This wine was made from 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from a small vineyard block dedicated to the 10th Nichelini child, Allen James, born in 1909. From this unique, select vineyard, these premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were hand-harvested and cellared in 53% new and 47% neutral French oak. A rich boysenberry red in color, this wine has flavors of vanilla, ripe cherry, blackberry and black currant, is smooth with soft tannins and has a long lingering finish.

This is our first Roman Press Red to earn our highest “Reserve” status featuring a brand new blend of two red Bordeaux varietals.
This wine, smooth and medium-bodied, is a blend of 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (80%) and 2013 Merlot (20%), from 32 and 33 year-old vines, respectively. The grapes were hand-harvested in the cool of the night and cellared in a precise ratio of new French and American oak. The result is a refined, Bordeaux-style wine offering delicate aromas and lustrous depths of rich blackberry, black cherry, anise and plum. It will become your new favorite!

These family-grown grapes are from the 32-year old Mary Block, named in honor of the seventh Nichelini child, born in 1902. The climate of this old vineyard mirrors the Bordeaux region of France where Merlot originated, generating extraordinary results. It exhibits a softness and a medium body, rich in color with intense fruit flavors reminiscent of raspberry and red cherries, a little plum. Hand-harvested at night and aged in 95% new American oak and 5% French, this wine stood out right from the start.

Muscadelle (Sauvignon Vert) is a Nichelini family classic. This white Bordeaux varietal comes from a small vineyard block planted 68 years ago, named for Rose, the 6th Nichelini child, born in 1899. The grape production of these rare old vines is low, concentrating their unique varietal flavors. The grapes were hand-harvested at night, slowly fermented, and have had no contact with oak. The wine expresses itself with a refreshing balance of nuanced notes of mineral, floral, citrus and with a soft finish.

This special Estate 100% Semillon Reserve wine marks the 125th wedding anniversary of Caterina Nichelini our founding mother. It also marks the 125th consecutive year of wine making by the Nichelini family.

Medium body with a crisp finish, this wine is 100% Semillon. It was both fermented and then aged for one month in new French oak. The result is a Bordeaux-style white wine with a color of champagne pearl, aromas of citrus and pear with a smoothness and slight creamy richness to the body; a delicious lemon soufflé.

Primitivo was the Zinfandel clone first planted by Anton Nichelini in 1890. This 123nd vintage was sourced from our Catherine Block, named in honor of the 8th Nichelini child, born in 1904. It was then barrel-aged for 21 months in 40% new American oak. The result is a bright, ruby-red color, medium-bodied wine with rich flavors of raspberry, red cherry and plum. An exceptional wine that can be savored now and in the years to come.

This is the 44th year of our extraordinary Zinfandel and Petite Sirah blend! It is named for our iconic Roman wine press (featuring a massive wooden lever), which was in use for 65 years (1895 – 1955), and can still be seen at the winery today.

Fermented on the skins for 14 days in stainless, it was then aged in 60% neutral French, 10% new and 30% neutral American oak for 21 months, married together for 2 months and then bottled.

With notes of blackberry and nutmeg with flavors of cranberry and plum, it expresses soft tannins with a smooth finish. A family favorite since 1972, it is excellent with red meats and classic Italian dishes.
