Our Wines

We pride ourselves in making small batches of superb, distinct wine, sourced from family vineyards. Tucked away in the idyllic Napa Valley’s “nested” appellation of Chiles Valley (once known as the “High Valley”), our vineyards lie 600 to 800 feet above the Napa Valley floor. Our vines benefit from this unique terroir, with its high-altitude breezes, milder climate, and extended growing period. Our 12 vineyard blocks are named in honor of each of our founding father’s 12 children.

Our old-fashioned attention to detail is complemented by our investment in the latest winemaking equipment and the technical rigor of our fifth-generation head winemaker, Aimée Sunseri, a graduate of UC Davis in Viticulture and Enology.

Nichelini classics include Cabernet Sauvignon, old-vine Zinfandel and our renowned Muscadelle de Bordelais (formerly titled Sauvignon Vert). In addition, we have an exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah and some limited releases available only at the winery.

"It is a heavy baton to carry, but the honor of making legacy wines only drives me towards perfecting my craft," says Aimée.

Taste the difference 120 years makes.

This rosé wine was made from 100% premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes planted 33 years ago in the Allen block, named for the tenth Nichelini child, born in 1909. Its beautiful, soft strawberry hue was achieved through the saignée (sen-YAY) method, which involves minimal juice-to-grape-skin contact. Hand-harvested, then slowly cold fermented with no oak. Not overly sweet, but with fruit-forward aromas of vanilla with strawberry and melon. Smooth and easy-drinking, the perfect wine for hors d’oeuvres with friends, or on a romantic spring outing.

This medium to full-bodied wine (94% Merlot, 6% Petite Sirah) reflects the concentrated depth of flavor and smoothness that 31-year-old vines can produce. These grapes were harvested from the Mary Block, named for the seventh Nichelini child, born in 1902. Deep ruby red in color with intense flavors of plum, black cherry, and blackberry, with light traces of smoke and cedar. Aged in 36% new and 64% neutral American oak, it is a supple, rounded wine with a beautiful long finish.

Widely grown in southern Italy, Primitivo is a high-end Zinfandel by another name. This truly exceptional vintage has earned the distinction of a Reserve wine. 100% Primitivo, the clusters were hand-harvested at night, then barrel-aged in a precise proportion of 50% American and 6% French new oak. The result is a medium-bodied wine with a smoky bouquet of toasted walnut, possessing rich flavors of blackberry, cherry, cacao, and vanilla, harmonizing into a supple finish.

This wine was made from 70% Sauvignon Musqué (a more aromatic variety of Sauvignon Blanc) and 30% traditional Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes come from a small vineyard block named for Virginia, the 4th Nichelini child, born in 1896. Hand-harvested during the cool nighttime, these young vines produce especially vibrant flavors. Slowly fermented with no oak contact, their crisp, summery bouquet of meadows and citrus has been preserved. This youthful wine may just steal your heart.

Muscadelle (previously called Sauvignon Vert) is a Nichelini classic.  This Bordeaux white grape comes from a small vineyard block planted 66 years ago, named for Rose, the 6th Nichelini child, born in 1899.  The grape production of the aged vines is low, concentrating the flavors.  It was hand-harvested, slowly fermented, and has had no contact with oak.  An off-dry white wine, it has a refreshing balance of hints of mineral on the nose, quince and lemon on the palate, and a medium body with a soft finish.

For the first time in Nichelini's history, we have created a wine that is a blend of all three white Bordeaux varietals: 80% Semillon, 13% Sauvignon Blanc and 7% Muscadelle.  The grapes were hand-harvested, fermented and then cellared with minimal oak contact.  With refreshing aromas of citrus, apricot and quince, it's a perfect match with everything from seafood to pasta carbonara.

This wine was made from 100% Petite Sirah grapes hand-harvested from Antoinette Block 11, named in honor of the 11th Nichelini child, born in 1913.  Petite Sirah has been grown in California since the 1880's and produced at Nichelini as a single varietal since the 1970's.  Because of the vineyard location, it is known as "High Valley" Petite Sirah.  This is a complex wine that is a dark, crimson red in color, full-bodied, and very long-lived, with a nose of vanilla and blackberry, and some warming citrus and spice at the finish.
